There a many types of family trusts, but family trusts usually refer to trusts that have been set up with the option to the option to include a surviving spouse and then distribute said assets.

Family trusts are also commonly referred to as a generation skipping trust or testamentary whereas it is designed to exist for more than one generation into the future, thereby qualifying for the generation skipping tax exemption.

They’re also known as a sprinkling trust. Under a sprinkling trust, no beneficiary has a right to receive any trust income. Instead, the trustee has discretion to divide the trust as he or she sees fit within a designated group of people.
